Mountain Dulcimer B Dave Haas Learn how to hold, tune, strum, fret the dulcimer, read tab, play backup chords, and participate in a jam session – all while learning great songs you already know! DAD
B/I Don Pedi Traditional Music for Beginning Players. We’ll work on free style strumming and natural noting (fingering) techniques using simple songs and tunes. No capos or chords will be used in this class.
B/I Butch Ross The Roots of Rock & Roll. Learn chord progressions and rhythms that make artists like Chuck Berry and the Beatles so unique and compelling. By the end of the week you’ll be able to figure out songs on your own!
B/I + Janita Baker Christmas and Holiday Music! Never too early to get ready for the winter holidays with fingerpicking, strumming and arrangements of all sorts of great holiday songs including some for Thanksgiving!
B/I – I Lorinda Jones Mountain Dulcimer “Plus” Ensemble. Learn a variety of tunes along with countermelodies, variations, and backup parts. Mountain dulcimer arrangements will be provided with tab and melodic variations in traditional notation. So bring your mountain or hammered dulcimer or other melodic instruments.
I Stephen Seifert Get Good at Learning and Memorizing Tunes. We’ll come at one to two tunes a day from every angle including listening, rough singing, sheet music, tablature, hand reading, analysis, ear training, and more. You will be better at memorizing tunes after this class. Bring a capo.
I Nina Zanetti Folk Hymns from America’s Past. We’ll learn hymns from a variety of historical traditions including Shaker music, Sacred Harp (shape note), spirituals and from early American hymn writers. We’ll explore expressive ways of playing, evoking the style of the tradition.
I Jerry Rockwell Easy Dronal Fingerpicking. Bring out the fullness and richness of your playing with this easily mastered style. We’ll also explore some simple harmony parts and counter-melodies for duet playing in this style.
I – I/A Tull Glazener Repertoire Class – Each Day a Different Theme! Monday - Fiddle Tunes; Tuesday – Gospel/Hymns; Wednesday – Christmas Tunes; Thursday – Tin Pan Alley; Friday – Marches.
I/A Aaron O'Rourke Irish Session Tunes. Learn how to flat pick tunes that are played at Irish sessions. We’ll also discuss ornamentation and how to accompany these tunes on the dulcimer.
I/A – A Sarah Morgan Wedding Repertoire. Unique and performance-ready arrangements of wedding classics including classical pieces and hymns. We’ll also cover delivering with expression and finesse, and wedding performance basics.
A Mark Gilston Dance Rhythms. We’ll work on English Jigs, Swedish schottisches, Irish hornpipes and American old time breakdowns as we make tunes truly danceable. We’ll work on proper accents, ornaments, tempo plus lots of tricks.
Hammered Dulcimer B Rick Thum Learn How the Dulcimer Works! We’ll cover where the notes are located and how to find them, and the tricks to learning tunes easily.
B/I - A Stephen Humphries Put a Damper On It! Incorporate dampers into pieces you already play as well as how to inspire new arrangements and compositions. No dampers? Still come and learn techniques to dampen without them.
I Andy Young Paris Café Waltzes. These quaint waltzes, called musettes, sound great on hammered dulcimer. In the process of learning a few common musettes you will also learn their interesting scales and arpeggios, as well as increased hand-separation needed for the chromatic nature of these fun tunes.
I – I/A Ruth Smith Christmas Music. The hammered dulcimer is the perfect instrument for Christmas music. We’ll learn various arrangements of well-known and not-so-well-known tunes for the season.
A Ken Kolodner Ensemble Arranging. We’ll create ensemble arrangements including back-ups, dynamics, chord progressions, alternating leads, medley construction, endings and beginnings, tempo, texture changes, stops and much more!
Penny Whistle B Guy George Learn to play the easiest instrument around! We’ll cover the basics and you’ll be playing tunes quickly! Learn techniques for breathing, tonguing, and the scales to play in “D”. Whistles available at KMW.
Banjo B Sue Massek Beginning Old Time Banjo. You’ll learn basic right hand techniques including clawhammer and old time one and two finger picking (not Bluegrass) and basic chord positions. You’ll learn to play a few simple tunes, too.
Mandolin B David Wilson We’ll work on proper left and right hand techniques, where to pick the strings for best volume and tone, basic chords and basic rhythm patterns, and we’ll learn some tunes.
Guitar B Vera Frazier Basic Beginning Guitar. We’ll start with tuning, simple chords, strumming, changing chord to chord, following chords to music you know.
B/I Steve Smith Learn various chord progressions, alternate chord positions and bar chord formation, and how to figure out chord progressions by ear and to hear keys, chord changes and patterns. You need to be able to play basic chords and have a steady rhythm ability.
Vocal All Carol Walker KMW CHORUS! We’ll apply elements of singing in harmony, striving for good blend and balance, musical phrasing and dynamics, correct intonation and enunciation, and expressive communication of lyrics, working toward a performance at week’s end!
Native American Flute All Marsha Harris We’ll cover techniques, fingers, breath control, as well as flute care as we learn to express our feelings through its voice. If you need flute information email Marsha at pickinbowin@gmail.com with questions.
Ukulele B Sharrie George All you need to know to get started playing the “uke”! Learn your ukulele parts, tuning, strums, chords, and be playing tunes quickly. A great refresher if you haven’t played in awhile. Uke’s available to rent.
Digital Photography All Jennifer Musgrave Digital Photography 101. F-stop, Pixel, white balance…join us to learn definitions of these terms as we improve your photography skills! Please bring a camera card and your camera instruction manual.
**Beadwork All Cynthia Merenbloom Learn an easy beading stitch and create a pick pocket of your own and then we’ll make some picks to go in it!
**Stained Glass B Gale Sturm Learn to mark and cut glass, grind, foil, solder glass, and take home a prize possession! No previous experience needed.
