DESCRIPTION

Mountain Dulcimer B Joellen Lapidus Absolute Beginner Class. We’ll work on 2 basic strums, basic fingerpicking patterns and simple chords, how to read tablature and the confidence to play with others.
B - B/I Butch Ross Jam Session Survival Kit. Learn to join the jam even when you don’t know the tune. We’ll look at song structures, common musical motifs, and a tiny bit of theory to help you stay afloat and contribute to the jam.
B/I Dave Haas Beautiful Melodies. Learn to play slow and flowing melodies by picking the notes one at a time! Improve arpeggio skills, left and right hand techniques. A capo is required for this class. DAD
B/I Sarah Morgan Sock Hop Music! Dust off your saddle shoes and get ready to do some “doo-wopping” on the dulcimer! Instrumental and vocal pieces. DAD
B/I Mark Gilston Playing In DAA. We’ll cover the more traditional styles of playing including using a noter, playing in thirds and sixths, basic chords, basic rhythmic strumming patterns and singing with harmonic accompaniment.
I Tull Glazener Dulcimer Ensemble. Learn multi-part arrangements of an eclectic mix such as waltzes, classical, gospel and more! New material from previous years in this fun class!
I Molly McCormack Old Ballads. This class will cover a lot of ground – murder, robbery, love, and loss. Learn words, melodies and histories behind these story songs. Various tunings will be used and you’ll need a capo.
I Aaron O'Rourke Making Sparks Fly with Flatpicking! Learn to pick with accuracy and speed with technical fundamentals to develop a solid foundation. We’ll also explore arrangements that sound much harder than they really are! DAD Capo
I/A Don Pedi Traditional Fiddle Tunes. An assortment of popular and archaic versions of “straight” and “crooked” fiddle tunes, played in the key they are usually played on the fiddle. No capos or chords will be used in this class.
I/A Wayne Seymour Playing Pieces In three Parts. We’ll combine melody, harmony, and bass (bass dulcimers not necessary but welcome), and learn a tune a day.
A Stephen Seifert How to Play Dulcimer with a Symphony Orchestra. I’ll share with you all the tablature and techniques needed to play both Blackberry Winter (a three-movement, 15 minute concerto for dulcimer and string orchestra) and Broad Band of Light (a 5-movement, 25-minute suite for full orchestra). Bring a capo.
Bowed Dulcimer B/I & UP Marsha Harris For the bowed dulcimer player with some experience, we’ll cover the finer nuances of bowing, fingering beyone first position, and backup to your ensembles.
Hammered Dulcimer ALL Stephen Humphries iDulcimer, Gadgets, Gizmos & Hammered Dulcimer. Learn how to use apps on iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, and other technological devices to enhance the music you enjoy playing. We’ll explore how to record yourself and use looping and other effects to inspire creativity, as well as the basics of using sound equipment.
B/I Andy Young Crooked Tunes From Quebec. These melodies, with a whole slew of rhythmic irregularities, are known as “crooked tunes”. They are wry and mischievous, dropping or adding a beat here or there from the typical 4/4 or 6/8 time signatures.
I Ken Kolodner Celtic Music Repertoire & Arranging. We will explore some lesser known, beautiful gems from the vast Celtic repertoire, using a variety of arranging techniques to make them your own.
I - I/A Ruth Smith Performance Lab. You’ll gain confidence in performing as you learn helpful tips to prep for performance, learn tricks to get performance jitters under control, and much more in this fun class.
A Rick Thum Advanced Repertoire & Arranging Techniques. We will cover techniques and tricks and what makes a song stand out beyond the others.
Mandolin B/I Jim Miller Old Time Mandolin. This class will cover chords, scales, pick techniques, and several simple melodies.
Ukulele B-B/I Peter Madcat Ruth Easy Ukulele! We’ll learn folk songs in the key of D, as well as some jamming techniques and tricks for playing songs you don’t know.
Guitar B-B/I Sue Massek You’ll learn chords, flat-picking and finger picking techniques as you add several songs on your journey through various folk and old time styles.
B/I - I Paul Oorts DADGAD tuning is actually easier than standard. We’ll cover basic chords, and playing techniques, etc.
Steel Drum I Guy George Rockin’ On the Steel Drum! We’ll work on techniques that make you a “REAL” steel drum player! We’ll learn some new tunes arranged for steel drum, getting more challenging as the week goes on.
Banjo B/I Steve Smith Sawmill Clawhammer Banjo. Learn the old appalachian mountain modal tuning called “Sawmill” with the “Galax Lick”, hammers and pulls, and a couple of basic drop thumb rolls. Advanced Beginner Skills.
Penny Whistle B/I Karen Ashbrook Beyond Hot Cross Buns! We’ll work on a variety of slow and fast repertoire, drawing primarily from Irish tunes, C naturals and also basic Irish ornamentation. You’ll need a D whistle (not a Clarke).
Autoharp B Karen Mueller We’ll learn the essentials starting with tuning and holding, arranging the chord bars and using fingerpicks. Then we’ll learn simple strumming patterns and begin to learn how to pick out simple melodies. Bring finger and thumb picks, music stand, and a recording device if you have one.
Fiddle B/I David Wilson We’ll learn playing rhythm, accompanying other instruments, different rhythm patterns with the bow, how to make chords and use double stops, vibrato, and different rolls while playing with other musicians.
Harp B/I Lorinda Jones Appalachian Folk Songs. We’ll learn traditional songs and ballads of Appalachia as we work on good melodic fingering and light chordal accompaniment. You’ll need basic playing skills for this class.
Bowed Psaltery B Tish Westman Introduction to the Bowed Psaltery. You’ll learn the basics including how to care for and tune your BP, bowing techniques and how to play several simple tunes on this ancient and easy to play instrument.
Vocal All Carol Walker Vocal Production Skills. We’ll learn methods to improve your vocal ability for a new level of confidence when you sing. Breathing and vocal exercises, along with ideas for range extension and improving vocal quality will also be covered.
**Basketry All Mary Carty We’ll be making totes and market baskets in this class. We’ll make a musical tote to carry all your books and supplies to classes and jam sessions. Bring scissors, clothes pins, awl, spray bottle, and a towel.
**Watercolor Painting All Anne Zabenco Learn the basic techniques of expressing yourself through painting with watercolor. Create several beautiful pieces with the skills you will learn during the week.
